Match report In its second year as an annual fixture, Hampstead Cricket Club made the journey to Leamington Spa for the competitive pre-season friendly at Arlington Avenue. Leamington were tested throughout, but, after a brief rain break, came away with a winning draw.
Leamington, batting first, built their score of 260-9 around a superb 77 from captain for the day, Mark Lewis. Lewis batted positively throughout, hitting some very familiar shots off his legs frequently to the boundary. Lewis was well supported with contributions from younger brother Tom (34) and Alex Phillips and Jason Young (both scoring 29). Despite losing a few wickets towards the end of the innings, Leamington finished on a respectable 260-9 from their 55 overs.
Young, making his first appearance since returning from neighbours Kenilworth Wardens shared the new ball with Tom Lewis, and the pair soon had Hampstead reeling at 37-4. Young and Lewis pitched the ball up and with a bit of assistance off the wicket, helped get Leamington off to the perfect start. A wicket each for James Uddin and David Bailey then saw Hampstead fall to 64-6 before a torrential downpour resulted in six overs being lost. Once the rain subsided, Hampstead rallied with captain Cotterill making 49 and Lombard, 33. Lewis and Young pushed for the victory but Hampstead held on, finishing on 178-9. Young (12-2-46-3) and Lewis (12-2-30-3) were the pick of the bowlers, while Leamington were excellent in the field, with Michael Balac taking two superb leg-side stumpings.
