Brewood v Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 27 Apr 2013 at 12 Noon
Leamington Cricket Club Won by 38 Runs

Match report Leamington’s season started in earnest on Saturday with the first Birmingham League fixtures of the season.

There has been a major change to the playing format this season as half of the fixtures will be 50 overs a side, ‘win or lose’. This includes the first games of the season, and early signs suggest this may suit the Club.

The 1st XI, once again led by Rob Williams, made the long trip to Staffordshire outfit Brewood for the first meeting between the two clubs. Leamington had chosen a youthful side with three players making their debuts for the Club in the Birmingham League, plus 14 year-old Jack Bewick making his 1st XI bow.

Choosing to bat first, Leamington made a solid start with openers Mark Best and new recruit Shabaaz Alam adding 47 for the first wicket. Best went for 22, allowing another debutant, Jonathan Wigley, to make his mark. Alam fell for 26, and Wigley was joined by David Bailey as they set about producing a match-winning partnership. They added 106 before Bailey was bowled for a well-crafted 53. Wigley carried on undaunted, before being run out for 67, a fine effort on his step up to Birmingham League cricket. Leamington closed on 226 – 7 in 50 overs; two wickets each for Brewood’s Dave Wedge, Morne Heyneke and James Banks.

Leamington’s innings had been punctuated by stoppages for rain and hail, so Brewood’s target was reduced to 142 in 24 overs. Leamington’s third debutant, Ollie Williams, now came into his own with an impressive spell of left-arm seam and swing. Following an early success for Paul Rowe, Brewood seemed set fair as Richard Bradford and Cameron Fox added 71 for the second wicket. Faisal Khalid got the important wicket of Fox for 35, allowing Williams to take centre stage, destroying the middle order with 4 for 23, a further wicket for Rowe, and one for Bailey, ensured Brewood fell well short of their reduced target, the home side closing on 113 for 8, leaving Leamington winners by 38 runs.

The new format means clubs need a minimum of five bowlers which should bode well for the Spa men.
