Match report Leamington 1st XI made the journey north to Walsall for their opening league match since gaining promotion to the Premier Division at the end of last season and started the season brilliantly with an emphatic 5 wicket victory.

After rain showers delayed the start of the match, play eventually started at 2pm with Leamington electing to bowl. From the opening over Leamington looked threatening with the new ball pairing of Lewis (7-1-30-1) and Young (8-2-29-2) taking early wickets. Young, in his first over removed Rawlinson to get the innings off to the perfect start while Lewis had the dangerous Powles caught at slip. Young and Lewis were well backed up by D'Silva (4-0-11-2) and Bailey (5-0-22-1) before Talati ripped through the middle and lower order to claim figures of 4-10 with his off-breaks to bowl Walsall out for 104.

In response, Leamington started nervously having been reduced to 38-4. Will Tavare, on debut, looked incredibly assured at the crease and carried his bat to finish with a brilliant 56 not out. He was well supported by Bailey (24) as the pair put on 62 for the fifth wicket to take the visitors towards a 5 wicket victory.

Leamington will be pleased with their efforts in what, potentially, could have been a very tricky opening encounter of the season.

Leamington 1st XI are at home next week to Himley.
