28 Aug 2009 : Under 14s Win County Cup
The all-conquering Under 14s won a nail-biting victory over old adversaries, Walmley, on Thursday at Edgbaston.
Taking first use of a good strip on the main ground, Leamington pleased their large band of travelling supporters with a tremendous opening stand. The prolific Mark Best, made 76, and was well supported by captain Harry Philpot, with an excellent 51. The middle order fell in a desperate thrash for quick runs, as Leamington closed on a challenging 161 - 7 in 20 overs. For Walmley, 'keeper Peter McKay was outstanding with five victims.
Walmley made a quick start, and although losing wickets were up with the required rate. The introduction of 13 year-old Jake Salmon changed the momentum towards Leamington as he took two wickets, including the dangerous McKay. Walmley, as expected, refused to give up the chase and a couple of dropped catches, and a generous donation of extras by Leamington, ensure the game went to the wire. Leamington's bowlers just about held their nerve, and the returning Charlie Bramley, ensure there would be no last gasp heroics from Walmley. He took 2 - 15, as Walmley finished on 156 - 7, giving victory to Leamington by 5 runs.
