Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI v BERKSWELL on Sat 30 Jun 2012 at 12.00 pm
Leamington Cricket Club Lost By 6 Runs
Match report
Leamington suffered a 6 run defeat at the hands of local rivals Berkswell in a thrilling game at Arlington Avenue.
Winning the toss and electing to bowl first on what turned out to be a slow but dry wicket, the opening pair of Tom Lewis and Raiza Jabarkheil bowled excellently with the new ball as Leamington dropped three catches before Lewis, who was making his first appearance of the season, eventually had Phil Neale caught behind before 16 year old Raiza Jabarkheil removed Coleman and Cornick in successive deliveries to leave Berkswell on 30-3. James Neale (29) and ex-Warwickshire batsman Ostler (51) took the score to 69 before Neale was spectacularly caught at first slip by Alex Phillips (who took 4 catches in the innings) off the bowling of Faisal Khalid who then removed current Warwickshire professional, Tom Milnes, second ball, to reduce Berkswell to 67-5.
However, a partnership of 41 between Ostler and Akhlaq (23) took Berkswell towards a competitive total of 143 despite an excellent spell from Paul Best (17-4-25-2) who was also making his first appearance of the season. Despite the three dropped catches, Leamington bowled excellently as wickets were shared between Lewis (2-31), Jabarkheil (3-43) and Khalid (3-39) as runs proved hard to come by. Berkswell were indebted to a fine knock from Ostler who held the innings together.
In reply, Leamington got off to the best possible start as Mark Best (13) and Alex Phillips (46) put on 49 for the first wicket before ex-Leamington player Chris Cheslin (4-47) changed the game in a fine spell of swing bowling as he removed Best, David Bailey and Tom Lewis in quick succession to reduce Leamington to 58-3. The introduction of the excellent Babar Khan (4-24) put Leamington in even more trouble as he removed Phillips, Luke Radford, Lee Hopkins and Paul Best to reduce Leamington to 79-7 before Cheslin removed Mark Lewis with the score on 86-8. With Berkswell on the brink of victory, Sam Cheshire and Faisal Khalid batted valiantly as they kept Leamington in the game with a magnificent partnership. With Cheshire (41) picking off the bowling from one end combining excellent defense with lusty blows, Khalid supported him superbly as the pair added 51 for the ninth wicket to take the score to 137 before Milnes was brought back in to the attack and when he had Khalid caught at mid-off, Cheshire followed next ball in a dramatic finish to an excellent game of cricket which saw Berkswell win by 6 runs.
Leamington will be disappointed to have lost a game for the second successive week that they feel, on another day, they could easily have won.
