Leamington Cricket Club Lost By 16 Runs

Match report Leamington suffered a 16 run defeat to a strong Himley side which included the former Indian Test star, Wasim Jaffer, who was making his first appearance for the club. Leamington once again won the toss and bowled first as Tom Lewis, with the second ball of the game had the dangerous Tranter caught at gully. This then brought Worcestershire’s experienced campaigner, Ben Smith to the crease who managed a useful 30 before being bowled by Jason Young, while D’Silva removed Wright (22) and Jaffer (32) in an excellent spell of (8-3-29-2). With Himley reduced to 115-4, Himley’s captain, Wedge, dug his side out of trouble with a well crafted 61, guiding Himley to a respectable 217-9 despite the spin duo of Talati and Purser picking up two wickets apiece.
In reply, despite the loss of a couple of early wickets, Alex Phillips scored an excellent 85 and looked set to guide Leamington to victory as he put on 73 for the third wicket with Tom Lewis (35) and then 50 for the fifth wicket with Bailey (25). Needing 40 off the last 11 overs with 6 wickets in hand, the momentum quickly changed hands when Phillips was finally dismissed. Leamington continued to lose wickets regularly to Smith (12.3-0-37-5) and Ahmed (16-2-33-3) as they fell to a 16 run defeat.
On reflection, Leamington will be looking to avoid repeating such a defeat after dominating the majority of the game and will be looking to get back to winning ways as they travel to Barnt Green, next Saturday.
