Leamington Cricket Club Lost By 5 Wickets

Match report Leamington suffered a five wicket defeat at the hands of top of the table Barnt Green at Arlington Avenue.

Winning the toss Leamington elected to bat first and were off to a flying start as Balac (44) and Phillips (31) put on 62 after the first 11 overs. However, Barnt Green struck three times in quick succession to peg Leamington back to 100-3 as Wilkinson and Bevan bowled with excellent control to make scoring difficult. However, brothers Tom and Mark Lewis (32) put on 77 to help place the foundations for a competitive score. Tom Lewis fell for an excellent 77 as he held the innings together before Lee Hopkins (34 off 24 balls) hit some lusty blows at the end of the innings to take the home side to a decent total of 230-5.

In reply, Barnt Green got off to a similar start to Leamington scoring 64 off the first 10 overs for the loss of one wicket as Ord (24) and Newport (46) got the reply off to an excellent start. The introduction of the in-form Khalid and 15 year old leg spinner, Darrel Williams (who was making his first team debut), helped to stem the flow of runs as Williams removed Shilvock for 21, and Khalid had the dangerous Wilkinson caught behind for 27 to reduce Barnt Green to 125-4. However, despite a further run out, Barnt Green reached the target for the loss of five wickets as Brown (38*) and Powell (49*) put on an unbeaten 90 run partnership for the sixth wicket, despite Leamington making the runs very hard to come by.

Leamington travel to Moseley next week in what could, potentially, prove to be a crucial match come the end of the season.
