Smethwick v Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 13 Aug 2011 at 12 noon
Leamington Cricket Club Won By 3 Wickets
Match report
Leamington came away from bottom placed Smethwick with a valuable three wicket win despite an excellent bowling display from Smethwick who had former Pakistan internationals Mohamad Akram and Mohammad Yousuf in their ranks.
Winning the toss, Leamington elected to bowl first on a difficult wicket and struck in the first over thanks to Tom Warner who bowled excellently with the new ball and was unlucky to only pick up one wicket with the new ball having beaten the bat on numerous occasions. Despite the early loss, Smethwick progressed nicely to 64 before Patel (30) and then former Pakistan international, Akram (27) brought about a procession of wickets as Tom Lewis (11-3-50-6) ripped through the middle order, including the prized wicket of Yousuf (27) as he bowled a fantastic line and length to put Leamington well on top as Smethwick were reduced to 130-8. However, the final two wickets added a further 50 runs to take Smethwick to a very respectable 180 all out. Warner (11.2-4-24-3) returned to pick up the final two wickets.
In reply, Leamington were under immense pressure from ball one as Akram (17-4-40-1) and Kirnon (14.2-3-48-4) made batting very difficult for the away side. At 79-4 the match was firmly in the balance but Michael Balac played a match winning innings of 76 and played with great maturity in very testing circumstances as he put on 60 with Lee Hopkins (29) to steer the match in Leamington's favour. However when both Balac and Hopkins were out, reducing Leamington to 148-6, it required captain Rob Williams (28*) to guide the away team to victory in what was a fantastic run chase against a very experienced bowling attack.
