Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI v Shifnal on Sat 07 Sep 2013 at 12 Noon
Leamington Cricket Club Won by 161 Runs
Match report
Leamington First XI carried their fight against relegation to the last match of the season, with a 161 run demolition of mid-table Shifnal.
Asked to bat first on a slow wicket, Leamington lost two early wickets, but got back on track with a century partnership from Shabaaz Alam and Paul Best. Warwickshire contracted player Best, played many pleasing shots before departing caught behind for 42. Simon Magill followed shortly, but Leamington increased the scoring rate through Alam and the effervescent Lee Hopkins. Alam finally went for a well-crafted 76, and Hopkins made 40. A late exhibition of uncomplicated strokes from Neil Smith (35) took Leamington to a daunting 278 – 9 after 50 overs. For the Shropshire side, star man Richard Oliver took 3 for 81 in ten expensive overs, and there were two wickets each for Michael Frost and Tom Collins.
In response, Shifnal seemed to be mentally back on the M54 home, and made a poor fist of their chase. Oliver, who has 1200 plus runs in the League, fell to a stunning catch from Dave Bailey off the bowling of Paul Rowe; one of three wickets for Spa’s paceman. Leggie Darrel Williams nipped out ‘keeper Simon Gregory, and the middle order succumbed to Alam. This left Neil Smith to apply the coup de grace, taking four wickets for four runs in 19 balls. Shifnal expired on 117 All Out barely using half of their allotted overs, and with no batsman making 20.
Unfortunately, Moseley’s One Run victory keeps Leamington in the relegation position, and the Birmingham side face rock-bottom Brewood on Saturday. Leamington travel to Malvern based Barnards Green aiming for a third win on the spin and hoping that Moseley face one final upset in a topsy-turvy season for both clubs.
