Match report Leamington Spa maintained their early-season momentum with a six-wicket surge against Whitchurch that hoisted them nine points clear at the head of the Division Two table.

Whitchurch posted a formidable 239-9 in their 50 overs on the back of Ijaz Yousaf’s exhilarating century but Lee Hopkins responded in equally forceful style as the Arlington Avenue men eased home with eight balls to spare.

Home captain Robert Williams elected to bowl and saw that decision fully justified as Tom Warner (3-47) and Faisal Khalid (2-61) removed half the Shropshire side for 113.

But the home attack took a fearsome battering from Yousaf who reeled off 16 fours and four sixes to amass 115 from 107 deliveries before finally falling to Warner at the end of a ninth-wicket stand of 77 that featured just two runs from Dave Warner.

Leamington lost both openers Shahbaz Alam (19) and Mark Lewis (12) with the score on 38 and slipped to 70-3 when David Bailey (20) became their third LBW victim.

But Mark Ashcroft (42) and Hopkins steadied the ship with an excellent stand of 95 and Hopkins carried on to finish with 93 from 80 balls – scoring seven fours and three sixes in the process and accumulating the final 77 in the company of skipper Robert Williams who picked off five boundaries in his 31.
