Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI v Old Elizabethans on Sat 28 Jun 2014 at 12.00
Match was Abandoned 5 points

Match report The day’s weather started promising – there were snatches of sunshine, but the forecast was not good. Showers were predicted – and the predictions were frustratingly accurate. The points’ difference (52) between Division 2 leaders Leamington and second place Stourbridge meant that no matter what the result of the day’s games, Leamington would retain first place. There was also an unbeaten record at stake too. So with clouds gathering, it was frustrating that Old Elizabethans won the toss and put Leamington into bat.
The heavy grey skies brought smiles to the faces of their bowlers, especially when opener Jonathan Wigley (2) was caught in the second over. The ball was zipping and seaming to make batting extremely difficult. Shabaz Alam put up some resistance, hitting a glorious six in the first over. After 25 minutes the anticipated rain arrived, interrupting the game for some 2½ hours whilst tea was taken. Back on, but with even greyer clouds overhead, Alam went, caught behind for 15 – the second wicket to fall to opening bowler Damon Gariff (2 for 12 off 12 overs). Mark Lewis stuck in determinedly but was caught behind off the bowling of Liam Booth (1 for 38 off 9 overs).
The introduction of Huw Selvey (3 for 19 0ff 3.4 overs) led to the fall of acting Captain David Bailey (16) who, with Mark Ashcroft (6) put on a 4th wicket partnership of 21 before both falling to Selvey, who also took the wicket of Lee Hopkins (16). Max Webber (6) and Grant Thornton (1) were at the crease when the heavens yet again opened and the game was abandoned (Leamington 5 points; Old Elizabethans 7 points, after 24.4 overs).
It had been a game in which the weather really helped the Elizabethan’s strong bowling attack, and left us all thinking of what might have happened if the rain hadn’t come! One thing we did know for sure was that this match was one of the 3 Division 2 games that was abandoned because of rain. The consequence of this was that Penkridge leapt into second place, 37 points behind Leamington. Penkridge narrowly beat Attock, whom Leamington play away on Saturday. The two following games are against rivals Stourbridge and Penkridge. Exciting times!!!
