Old Elizabethans v Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 06 Sep 2014 at 12.00
Leamington Cricket Club Won by 75 runs

Match report Leamington made the trip to Worcester to face Old Elizabethans who still harboured hopes of joining Leamington in Division 1 next season.

Old Elizabethans elected to bowl first and their decision was justified with Jonathan Wigley (4) falling in the first over. Ollie Currill (28) and Max Webber (31) then added 55 for the second wicket as the two teenagers played with great maturity. Leamington then lost their way once the home side turned to spin as they slumped to 96-5. However, Lee Hopkins (51) and Jimbo Williams (31) formed a brilliant counter-attacking partnership of 51 before Grant Thornton joined Hopkins in an even more aggressive partnership of 55 before Hopkins fell for yet another valuable contribution. Thornton went on to compile his first ever Birmingham League fifty as he smashed 61 off only 31 balls in helping his side reach a formidable 251 all out. The strength of Leamington's batting order was clearly highlighted by Thornton's brilliant knock as despite being in a perilous position, Thornton helped add 100 runs off the last 10 overs. For the home side, Pugh (3-62), Bartlett (2-42) and Booth (2-51) were the stand out bowlers.

In reply, Old Elizabethans came out all guns blazing but when Thornton had the dangerous Smit caught behind for 20, Mark Ashcroft then picked up two quick wickets to leave the home side 99-3. At this point, the game was still very much in the balance with Miles at the crease, but with wickets tumbling at the other end, he was soon running out of partners. Miles went on to compile a well-compiled run-a-ball fifty, but when Ashcroft had him caught behind for 68, the game was over bar the formalities. Webber formed an excellent partnership with Ashcroft as Webber finished with 3-23 and Ashcroft showed yet again how valuable his acquisition has been this season with 4-28. Thornton (2-36) returned to take the final wicket to secure a 75 run victory. The latest win maintains Leamington's unbeaten season, opening the gap at the top of the table to 74 points.

Leamington welcome Attock, who are currently second in the table, to Arlington Avenue this Saturday for the final game of the season.
