Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI v Attock on Sat 04 Jul 2015 at 12.00
Leamington Cricket Club Lost By 21 Runs
Match report
Leamington's up and down season continued as they lost at home to Attock, by 21 runs, who have become somewhat of a bogey team.
Winning the toss, Leamington bowled first and made early inroads as Grant Thornton (3-28) reduced the visitors to 16-2 and when he removed Asim Khan (20) the score was 57-3. Two crucial partnerships, both involving Mohammed Qamar Khan, started to swing the game in Attock's favour. A 52 run partnership with Omar Masood (21) followed by a second 52 run partnership with Sultan Mahmood (20) took the score to 161. However, the introduction of spin twins Mark Ashcroft (1-24) and Jamie Marsh, who was making his home début for the club, ripped through the lower order as he picked up 5-32 on a very impressive first home outing as Attock crumbled to 198 all out. Qamar Khan played an outstanding hand as he finished on a masterful 88 not out.
In reply, Leamington got off to the worst possible start as Sarmad Anwar (4-55) took three quick Leamington wickets to leave the hosts 20-3. A partnership of 36 between Ollie Currill (23) and Mark Ashcroft (16) looked to rebuild the innings but when Junaid Khan (3-33) took three quick wickets of his own, Leamington were restricted to 77-7. Lee Hopkins tried to shepherd the tail as alongside Thornton (18) the pair put on 50 to take the score to 127-8 before he and last man Matthew Davison (13) put on 37 to give Leamington a chance of a miraculous victory. However, when Davison was out, Hopkins was left stranded on a brilliant 77 as he had taken Leamington a lot closer than most would have expected. This was a third consecutive fifty for Hopkins.
The defeat leaves Leamington sixth in the table as they welcome Harborne this coming Saturday.
