Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI v Walsall on Sat 30 Apr 2016 at 12.00
Leamington Cricket Club Lost by 23 Runs (DLS)

Match report Leamington’s first league match of the season ended in defeat at home to fellow promoted side Walsall, but there were enough encouraging signs to suggest the Spa men will be competitive this season , despite losing a raft of players to other Clubs.

Walsall batted first and soon lost Mike Hingley, caught be new ‘keeper Nathan Hooker off the bowling of Tom Warner. The experienced Tim Maxfield joined Walsall’s own stumper James Middleton and they took the score to 95 before Middleton was caught and bowled by Paul Lawrence for 49. Maxfield made 51 before he fell to the leg spin of Jamie Marsh. Leamington’s bowlers stuck to thjeir task well and although Walsall’s batters made starts, none could play a defining innings. Marsh and Lawrence each snared another victim, whilst Jon Wigley mopped up the tail with three good wickets, as Walsall were dismissed for 192.

The weather had already intervened, and a further break for rain, saw Leamington’s target reduced in line with the Duckworth Lewis calculations. Max Webber fell to an over ambitious hook and new men Alex Mellor and Adeel Sajid both looked good before falling to Ed Denham. Captain Lee Hopkins tried to raise the rate, but he was dismissed leg before by Paul Byrne for 18. The inevitable rain came with Leamington 88 – 5, 25 runs behind the revised target. Ironically, the captains and umpires shook hands at the end of the match with the ground bathed in bright, if not a little watery sunshine!
